Lan Zhou

Portrait of the artist Lan Zhou

Vast, quiet fields of atmosphere where a single form — a moon, a tree, a line of birds — carries the silence.

The work

Lan Zhou’s works are exercises in restraint. Most of each canvas is atmosphere — sand, haze, pale water, an empty sky — and what remains is a single quiet event: a rising moon, a lone tree, seven birds crossing.

The palette moves between desert warmth and cool blue light: ochre hills under a sepia moon, layered blues where water meets a brightening horizon. Thin, weathered layers make the surfaces feel found rather than painted.

These are slow works. They reward the second look, and the tenth — the way a wide horizon does.
